Recommended Flat Towing Setup for a 2005 Jeep Liberty With Roadmaster EZ4 Base PLate Kit

Question:

I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty I want to tow behind our motor home. I like the looks of the Road Master EZ4 Base Plate Kit. and the Curtis tow bar # 63180. Is this a good combination ? do you have any recommendation that may help me with installation like accessorizes needed to connect the tow bar to base plate? Any help is greatly appreciated

I really like the base plate kits that have the removable arms like the Roadmaster EZ4 # RM-521423-4 does because it will give your vehicle, your 2005 Jeep Liberty in this instance, much more of an OEM look when you are not flat towing it.

I do not recommend using the Tow Ready Adjustable Tow Bar # 63180 as it is a very entry-level tow bar that requires the tow bar mounting brackets to be bolted to your bumper. For some applications there will need to be a custom bracket installed due to the bumper design. So basically this tow bar comes with its own mounting brackets, but even though it is rated for 5,000 lbs you will not want to use this tow bar if you will be towing your Liberty fairly often.

The tow bar that is compatible with the base plate kit that you will be installing on your Liberty and that is most like the Tow Ready part that you referenced is part # RM-020. It will fit a 2 inch hitch ball, is rated for 5,000 lbs, and is compatible with the EZ4 base plate kit. You will need to make sure that your ball mount is at the appropriate height when flat towing. I have attached a help article about choosing the correct ball mount for a level towing setup as well as our selection of ball mounts for you choose from.

Keep in mind that you will also need Safety Cables, Tow Bar Vehicle Wiring, and a Supplemental Braking System.

For safety cables that are rated for 6,000 lbs I recommend going with part # RM-643 which are coiled to help keep them from dragging on the ground while towing.

For tow bar vehicle wiring I recommend going with the Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267. This kit is easy to setup and will provide you with a quick connect and disconnect option for easier flat towing setup.

Since most states require the use of a supplemental braking system you will need to install one not only to abide by the law but to also give yourself a towing setup that is more safe. For this I recommend the SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO Supplemental Braking System # SM99251. Once installed it is a breeze to use and will apply the brakes on your Liberty in proportion to how you apply the brakes in your motorhome.

I have attached some review and installation videos that you can check out as well.
