Recommended Weight Distribution For Trailer With Total Tongue Weight Between 350 and 600 lbs

Question:

My tongue weight is 400 lbs, and the amount of cargo I carry in my bed varies constantly. What if I have a light load in the back of my truck and the tongue weight comes in at 350lbs? Will this be a problem with this system? Im having a little trouble deciding. Obviously I need something in the correct range, but I never know exactly what is going to be in the back of my truck. I guess my question is, if I get this system and end up a little light, can it cause damage to the truck or the trailer? Is there a system with a 300-600 pound range? Thanks!

A weight distribution system that is rated too high for your total tongue weight of your loaded trailer and cargo behind the rear axle, can be an issue. You won't cause damage to your truck or trailer, but it can cause a rigid ride and in the worst cases can even cause the trailer to bounce which obviously means the traction isn't where it needs to be for proper control.

Based on the info you gave, I recommend the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control - Trunnion - 6,000 lbs GTW, 600 lbs TW # FA92-00-0600 or the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control - 6,000 lbs GTW, 600 lbs TW # EQ37060ET over the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control - Round - 6,000 lbs GTW, 600 lbs TW # FA94-00-0600. The Equal-i-zer system is rated for 200-600 lbs of total tongue weight and the Fastway trunnion bar system is rated for 250-600 lbs. Either of these will keep you within your range and give you the flexibility of the lighter load with peace of mind. The Equal-i-zer system gives you two additional points of friction sway control in the head of the unit, otherwise these systems are very comparable. The Equal-i-zer system comes with a hitch ball, and the Fastway system will need either the 2-5/16" Hitch Ball for Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Systems - 10,000 lbs # EQ91-00-6100 or the 2 inch # EQ91-00-6080. For either system I recommend the # EQ70-00-4800 to install the hitch ball in that tight space.
