Using Trailer Hitch Adapter to Expand 1-1/4 Inch Receiver for Use with 2 Inch Accessories

Question:

I understand by using a 2inch to 1.25inch adaptor would reduce the capacity of the max load from by 50 from 200 to 100 lbs. Is that the only criteria for safe usage? Im thinking of using it with just one bike that would total weight in lbs, 50 rack + 30 bike . Thanks.

As you mentioned, using a trailer hitch adapter like the Brophy # HTAD in order to use 2 inch hitch accessories with your 1-1/4 inch receiver opening will reduce the hitch tongue weight capacity by 50%. As long as you remain under this reduced capacity with your bike and bike rack, this will be perfectly safe to use. I just recommend adding a stabilizing strap like the Curt # 18050 to reduce any added movement that the adapter might cause.

I have attached short video demonstrations on these products for you to check out.
