How To Minimize Trailer Sway While Towing

Question:

I just purchased a 2017 Ford F150 SuperCab 4x4 with Max Tow package. I tow a 34' tow behind trailer, and when tractor trailers drive past on the highway, the truck and trailer feel loose and unstable. Someone recommended that a timbren kit might help improve stability and control. Is this correct, and how does it do so?

It sounds to me like you are experiencing trailer sway. Although the Timbren springs are an excellent suspension enhancement option, they are not the best option to eliminate trailer sway or stability, but they will help increase the stability of your truck while under load.

The Timbren springs are a great addition when experiencing vehicle sag however, for trailer sway and stability, I recommend using a sway control bar such as the Reese Friction Sway Control Kit part # 83660. Since your trailer is more than 26' long, you will want to install two sway control bars on both sides of the trailers frame.

The Reese bar will mount to the frame of your trailer and attach to the side of the ball mount on the hitch receiver. You can tighten and loosen the adjustment screw for more and less sway control. Installation is very straightforward and you only need 2 of the Weld-On Sway Control Tab part # C45822. You will want to attach the sway control tabs on both sides of the ball mount for your setup. You will also need to detach both friction bars in order to reverse the trailer.

Another option you have is to use a weight distribution system with built in sway control features. In order to do this, you must find determine your total tongue weight which can be found using the attached help articles.

I have also attached an installation and review video of the friction bar for you.
