What Is The Best Vehicle To Be Flat Towed With 4 Wheels Down
Question:
We currently tow a 2003 cavalier, which we keep exclusively as our tow vehicle. We are looking to replace one of our cars and are hoping to find something that can easily be towed, so we can eliminate one car. We tow with a Minnie Winnie. Any suggestions

I have a few parameters for you to consider on your next vehicle purchase, however it can be difficult to recommend a certain make and model as we offer flat towing equipment for a wide variety of passenger vehicles.
There are a few key features you will want to keep in mind while selecting a vehicle to be flat towed. For example, if you are capable of driving a car with a manual transmission, I recommend choosing a vehicle that has one as a manual transmission will not wear near as fast and an automatic transmission will while flat towed. Another important key feature to check for is the use of CVT technology in a vehicle's transmission. If you decide to purchase an automatic transmission you will need to be weary of selecting one with CVT functions as these types of transmission are generally not capable of being flat towed with 4 wheels down. You will not need to worry about CVT in a manual transmission. To ensure your vehicle is capable of being flat towed, you may want to consider a model with front wheel drive (FWD) as the majority them are capable of being flat towed with four wheels down opposed to rear wheel and all wheels drive models which are not always flat tow compatible. Whichever vehicle you decide to go with, you will want to check the owner's manual as they will state whether or not the vehicle can be flat towed with four wheels down in addition to what will be needed to do so.
I can however say that the most popular vehicle we see our customers flat towing, is a Jeep Wrangler. Should you decide to go with a Jeep Wrangler, say 2012. You will need a base plate kit, tow bar, wiring harness, safety cables, supplemental braking systems and possible a high-low adapter. For a base plate kit, I recommend the Roadmaster EZ5 Base Plate Kit part # RM-521448-5 paired with our Roadmaster Nighthawk All Terrain part # RM-676. As the Nighthawk tow bar has safety cables included, you will not need to buy a set. You will also need a wiring harness and supplemental braking system such as the Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit part # RM-15267 and the SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO Supplemental Braking System part # SM99251. To prevent the towed vechiles brake lights from overriding the RV's brake lights, you will need the Roadmaster Brake-Lite Relay Kit for Towed Vehicles part # RM-88400.
As we have installation videos for every part I have recommend on a Jeep Wrangler, this will make the process far less worrisome. I have attached these installation videos in addition to our high-low adapter selection for you.
