For your 2017 BMW X5 40e, both the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # 75600 and the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # 13077 are confirmed to fit. Neither hitch will interfere with the backup sensors and both installation instructions state they may require a little trimming. The Draw-Tite hitch we installed, and I've attached the video so you can see that in this case it did not require trimming. For this reason, I recommend the Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver for your application.
If you will be using this trailer hitch receiver for towing, I recommend the ZCI Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness w/ 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector and Installation Kit # 119250KIT that allows you to capture the signal functions without splicing into your wires. It uses zero-contact-interface sensors. Both of these wiring harnesses require a power wire from your battery, and I've attached an article to assist you in running that power wire.
For a ball mount, I recommend the B&W Tow & Stow 2-Ball Mount - 2" Hitch - 5" Drop, 5-1/2" Rise - 10K - Black # BWTS10037B. This ball mount is adjustable to allow you to tow many trailers level. It has two hitch ball options, a 2 inch and a 2-5/16 inch to fit with most standard trailer couplers. This ball mount also has a unique stowable feature to give you a clean look when not in use and protect you from hitting your shins while loading and unloading when not in use. I recommend using a hitch lock like # e98882 to secure your investment.
