Can Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch on a 2013 Dodge Durango Tow a 5,500 Pound Trailer

Question:

I added to my 2013 Dodge Durango Hemi engine a draw-tite #75713 trailer hitch. I had the factory wiring to rear but no hitch. After installation I heard that these after market under the bumper type hitches are only good to tow 3500 lbs even though rating is 6000 lbs? My Durango specs say can tow up to 7200 with factory tow package.. My question is: can I not tow a 5500 camper with this hitch? Thank you

Whomever you heard that from might be referring to towing with the actual bumper such as on a truck that has the hole for a ball. Those set ups are generally rated for a maximum of 3,500 pounds. Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 75713 when installed on your 2013 Dodge Durango will have a capacity of 6,000 pounds gross trailer weight and 900 pounds tongue weight. When used with weight distribution it is rated for 7,500 pounds gross trailer weight.

Since both the hitch and the vehicle are rated higher than 5,500 pounds you will be able to tow the 5,500 pound trailer and still be well within the capabilities of the hitch and vehicle.

I also recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.

If the ball mount kit does not have the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, use the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.
