Which Weight Distribution Systems Allow Backing Up Trailer

What is the problem with backing up with a weight distribution system. I have always been told not to. But never told why?

Expert Reply:
The weight distribution/sway control (WD/SC) systems that use a simple friction style sway control mechanism like # 83660 cannot be backed up without first disconnecting this device. They will be damaged if you back up the trailer when they are engaged.
Other types of WD/SC that use integrated anti-sway, such as the Equal-I-zer # EQ37100ET and the Strait-Line # RP66084, do allow you to reverse the trailer without having to do anything. Such integrated anti-sway hitches also deliver far more effective sway control since they can actually resist it, rather than just reacting to it once it happens like the friction units.
