What Is The Best Weight Distribution System For A Trailer Tongue Weight Of 540 Lbs.
Question:
I have a travel trailer, single axle. I did weight measurements and the tongue weight was 540# but this did not include any cargo behind the axle of a 2017 Tahoe. I estimate another 60-80# will be added for a total tongue of 600-620#. Trailer has electric brakes. Looking at your hitches, it looks like the ones rated for 800# would be correct since at the top of the info it lists weights of 600,700 and 800# I assume the 800# is the maximum. The gross weight of the trailer is 4000#. The Tahoe has plenty of capacity for this weight. I also am concerned about the ground clearance of the round bar hitch. My trailer does not sit high off the ground, measurement to top of ball of Tahoe is 21 empty. When I hook the trailer it sags about 1 1/2 to 2. Top of trailer frame when level is 19 1/2. The tube frame for the trailer is 2x4. The distance from the center of the ball to the area where I can place the bracket over the frame is a bare minimum of 27 to the front of the bracket. In other words, center of ball to the back of the propane tank is 27 so it looks like I ideally need about 27 1/2 from center of ball to front of bracket for no interference. Would a trunion or round bar be best? What hitch do you recommend? Thank you

In order to receive the best performance from your weight distribution system, you will want your total tongue weight to fall in the middle of the range the system is capable of. Therefore, you are correct in that a system rated for 800 lbs of total tongue weight will be sufficient for a total tongue weight of 600 lbs.
As you have identified your total tongue weight of being roughly 620 lbs. I recommend using the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control part # FA92-00-0800 as these systems are excellent options with built in sway control features. The recommended bracket placement is 27-30" back from the center of the hitch ball therefore, this system will work for you. You will also need a ball mount like the 2" Hitch Ball part # EQ91-00-6080.
I recommend the trunnion bar type over the round bar as they will provide a greater amount of ground clearance between the ground and the head of the weight distribution system. The Fastway E2 has a max rise of 6-3/8" and max drop of 1-5/8".
