Powered Fans to Correct Cooling Issue with 427 Big Block in 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle SS
Question:
Have a 66 Chevelle SS with 450HP 427, auto trans, new 160 thermostat, and aluminum radiator and dual fan setup I believe to be by Champion. Just bought the car. Dont know the CFM of the fans, but they appear pretty small. The engine runs VERY hot after several minutes, even without the AC on. Will your 4000 CFM unit fit my car? What problems might I encounter?

For the sake of your really outstanding vehicle I want to suggest that first you investigate whether there is any issue with your coolant/water pump that could be causing the engine to run hot. A dual-fan set up with aluminum radiator should do a pretty good job of cooling even a big block 427. We can certainly help you with new cooling fans but if there is some other underlying issue involved that would best be squared away first. If there is an internal cooling problem then new supplementary fans are not likely to be able to correct for it.
The dual fan shroud setup # D16927 with its substantial 4,000-CFM output will certainly do a lot to increase air flow through your radiator. Best of all it does so regardless of driving speed. This is for puller applications only so this unit needs to mount behind the radiator. Since this unit pulls substantial power, about 25-amps per fan, you'll want to make sure your alternator has the capacity for it and the other fans installed.
You will want to compare this item's dimensions to the available space you have to mount it.
