Parts Needed to Tow a 1995 Mercury Villager Behind a Motorhome

Question:

I need a tow bar that will fit my 1995 mercury villager minivan. I want to tow my minivan behind my 28ft motorhome down the coast. What product will work? Thanks

From my research a 1995 Mercury Villager cannot be flat towed with all 4 wheels on the ground without causing damage to the van. You should check your owner's manual or with Ford to verify this though.

If it cannot be flat towed you may be able to tow it using a tow dolly like the Roadmaster # RM-2050-1.

If you find out the Villager can be flat towed you'll need a tow bar, a base plate kit to connect the tow bar to the van, lighting, a supplemental braking system, and likely a high-low adapter.

The only base plate kit we carry to fit the Villager is # BX2123 from Blue Ox. In installs onto the van's chassis so it can be towed. This kit will pair nicely with the Blue Ox Avail # BX7420. The Avail also comes with the safety cables needed.

For lights on the van I recommend using an easy magnetic kit. The Optronics Kit # TL21RK is our most popular magnetic kit. It plugs into the RV's 4-way connector.

A supplemental braking is required by law to flat tow in many states. It engages the van's brakes with the RV's for safer towing. The Stay-IN-Play DUO # SM99251 is a favorite around here because of how reliable it is and it's easier to install than many other permanently installed systems.

Finally, you'll likely need a high-low adapter. I've attached an article to help you determine the correct rise or drop your setup requires. I've also linked our selection of adapters for you to look at once you know what you need.

In addition to my recommendations I've linked some articles on flat towing that you may find helpful.
