Will Trailer Sway be Caused by Using a Weight Distribution System to Reduce Vehicle Sag

Question:

My trailer has a hitch weight of about 450 pounds 10 to 15 of GTW. If I use a weight distribution hitch to lessen that hitch weight, am I going to encounter sway due to the lighter hitch weight?

Expert Reply:

Using a weight distribution system, like the Reese Round Bar Weight Distribution Kit, item # RP67509, will not cause sway, and does not necessarily reduce your tongue weight.

Weight distribution systems distribute the weight to the vehicle and trailer axles, help to reduce vehicle sag, keep the trailer and vehicle level for proper towing and help to eliminate sway in many instances.

If you do encounter sway, a sway control bar, item # 83660, can be added to the system to help control sway when high winds or large trucks pass.

We have an informational article on weight distribution that should help, see link.

Along with the Reese Weight Distribution system you will need a properly sized hitch ball with a 1/1/4 inch shank. The Tow Ready Ball, item # 19286, is a 2-5/16 inch ball capable of 12,000 pounds trailer weight, and the Curt Hitch Ball, item # A-90, is a 2 inch ball capable of 8,000 pounds trailer weight.
