Weight Distribution System Recommendation for a 2,900lb Trailer Towed by a 2001 Dodge Dakota

Question:

Im trying to determine if the Reese 350 Mini-lite WDS 66024 is the correct marriage for my system. 2001 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab w/ Class IV hitch towing vehicle and trailer- Heartland MPG with GTW of 2900 lbs and a tongue weight of 341 lbs. Added weight behind rear axle of Dakota yet to be determined. Do you recommend going to a heavier system e.g. something say 350 - 500 lbs tongue weight? Your advise says not to have a system that is not rated high enough, but to avoid one that is too high because a rigid ride is the outcome.

When choosing a weight distribution system you will want one that has a tongue weight capacity range that encompasses the tongue weight of your trailer, loaded and ready to tow. This will also include the weight in the truck bed behind the rear axle as you have indicated. It is always better to go bigger than too small. Another benefit of going a little larger is that you are not as limited to what you can tow in the future.

I recommend going with a system that is rated for 250 to 400 pounds like the Reese Weight Distribution System w Shank, # 66557. This system comes with the required shank so you would just need a properly sized ball like # 19286 (2-5/16 inch diameter) or # A-90 (2 inch diameter).

If you also want sway control, I recommend the same system but with dual-cam sway control added. take a look at Strait-Line Weight Distribution System w Sway Control, # RP66086. This system comes with dual-cam sway control which is a proactive system that stops trailer sway before it starts. This system also comes with the shank so you would just need a properly sized ball.

If you are not sure if you want sway control, you can use the first system and add sway control later using Reese Dual Cam High-Performance Sway Control, # RP26002. I have included instructions links for the weight distribution system and sway control for reference. I have also included a link to our weight distribution FAQ article.
