Trailer Signal Lights Malfunctioning After Installing Optronics Tail Light
Question:
Hi there. Just want to request a bit of brainstorming on my 2004 VW Touareg, with a 2012 4ftx8ft utility trailer. I purchased the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector 118509, installed and hauled the trailer without any issue. However, I installed a second set of lights for greater visibility, Sealed, 6-1/2inch Oval LED Trailer Stop, Turn and Tail Light, Flange Mount, 10 Super Diode STL78RB. For the LED lights: - White wires ground, I grounded to the metal body of the door hinges. - Red wires signal/brake, I spliced into either the yellow left signal or green right signal wires from the trailers 4-poles harness. - Black wires tail light, I spliced into the brown wires that run from the trailers harness to the existing trailer left and right side. Problem: - When all wires were hooked up accordingly, signalling either left or right, ALL lights flashes emergency mode. - When I removed the tail light wires on the LED lamps, signal and brake work perfectly, without running light. - When I spliced into the left trailer brown wire, and also ran it to the right side LED lamp black wire, signalling, braking, and tail light were working perfectly when I signaled left. However, when I signaled right, all lights blinked in an emergency mode. - I did the same for the right like I did for the left to test, right signal, running light, and brake were perfect. Signal to the left, all lights blinked in an emergency mode. At this point, Im scratching my head. Any help is greatly appreciated. If the description is unclear, let me know. Ill be glad to submit photos, or link of video.

From what I can see in your question, it seems like the most likely cause for the signal lights on your trailer to be malfunctioning after installing the Optronics Sealed Stop, Turn and Tail Light # STL78RB is the ground connection on your trailer. You mentioned grounding the white wire from the new light to the metal body of the door hinges. I strongly recommend finding a more suitable ground on the main trailer frame for this wire. A weak or bad ground can certainly lead to many different head scratching issues when it comes to trailer signal lights.
I first recommend securing the ground connection by finding a way to run it down to the trailer frame. If this does not resolve the issue, please let me know and I will be happy to look into this further.
