Recommendation For Towing A High Side Trailer And Bike Rack With 2010 Honda CRV

Question:

Hi. Im planning on towing an aluminum high side 20 a-frame trailer along with a 4 bike hanging rack like he Thule Apex. W I have a 2010 Honda CR-V with a stated towing capacity of 1500 pounds. Ive installed a Curt class 3 hitch with 350 TW/3500 GVW. I am thinking of using the Curt D192 adapter as part of the setup. Will this reduce the TW of the hitch to 175 pounds total 50 of overall capacity of hitch between the upper and lower receiver? Also, how would the use of an extended ball mount in the lower receiver to increase trailer separation affect the overall capacity of the setup? Thank you.

The use of the Curt Dual 2" Receiver Tube Adapter, 8" Extension # D-192 or a similar adapter will decrease your vehicle's hitch tongue weight by 50%. So if your hitch tongue weight is rated at 350 lbs max, that would make your tongue weight 175 lbs max to carry your 4 bikes, the bike rack, the ball mount, and the tongue weight of your trailer.

Using an extended ball mount like the Brophy Ball Mount - 3" Rise, 4" Drop - 14-5/8" Long - Aluminum - 8,000 lbs # EA40 will not affect the tongue weight rating any further than it is already effective using the adapter.

Another option is to use the Stromberg Carlson Bike Bunk Trailer-Mounted Bike Rack Carrier for A-Frame Trailers - 2"-100 lbs # CC-275 to mount your bike rack to your trailer if room will allow. Then you can use the extended ball mount without decreasing your tongue weight capacity.
