Recommendation on a Weight Distribution System for a Jeep Wrangler and Camplite Trailer

Question:

Hi, I just bought a Camplite ultralight camper weighing 3,170 unloaded vehicle weight, pulling it with Jeep wrangler unlimited weighing 4,397 , Dry hitch weight 300 lbs. Do I need a weight distribution hitch with sway bars, bringing it back from Alabama the semis pushed me back and forth. What is your recommendation, going to install ourselves since on a budget. Thanks

To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I have attached a help article that explains how to find the total tongue weight of your Jeep and trailer.

In researching the Camplite trailer I found that the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating(GVWR) is around 4,700 lbs. Tongue weight will usually be 10 to 15 percent of the GVWR, in this case 470 to 700 lbs. Because of the sway issue you experienced I'd highly recomend a system that provides sway control along with weight distribution. The Reese Steadi-Flex would work well for you. If your trailer's tongue weight is below 500 lbs, go with # RP66558 or # RP66559 for tongue weights above 500 lbs but below 1000 lbs. The system includes a weight distributing shank but the properly sized trailer ball with a 1-1/4 inch diameter shank is sold separately as # 63845 for a 2 inch ball or # 19286 for a 2-5/16 inch ball.

I've linked you to some FAQ articles that you might find helpful as well as to a product demonstration featuring the Reese Steadi-Flex system.
