How To Choose The Correct Hanger Width For A Double Eye Leaf Spring

Question:

Should shackle bolt be tightened and bend hanger until compresses onto the spring and than backed off? Or just till startes to bend and its good enough? But then the kurl is not pulled in to bracket. Im running 1 3/4 springs and I think the opening is 2 5/8 so there is quite a bit of space Thank you

No, the bolts while being tightened down should not cause the hangers to bend inward towards the leaf. This will weaken the hanger and potentially cause it fail. You will need to get new hangers to match your leaf springs or new leaf springs to match your hangers. There should only be around an 1/8" or less of clearance between the leaf spring and hanger. For a 1-3/4" double eye leaf spring, you will want a hanger designed for that width of spring such as the Front/Center/Rear Hanger for Double-Eye Springs part # 115918.

The normal procedure, assuming you are using the correct hangers, is to run the shackle bolt down until the knurls fully engage, then back it off.
