I will be happy to clear up what all you will need to add the equipment to tow the trailer and activate the electric brakes.

First, if your 2004 Nissan Xterra does not already have a trailer hitch you will need to add one. A popular option is Curt trailer hitch # 13183. This is a Class III hitch with a 2 inch receiver. The hitch itself is rated for 400 pounds tongue weight and 4,000 pounds gross trailer weight but limited to the vehicle capacity if lower.

I also recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.

If the ball mount kit does not have the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, use the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.

To add a brake controller the first thing you will need is to install a 4-Way trailer connector using # 119178KIT. Once that is installed you can add # ETBC7 which adds a 7-Way connector and provides the wiring and accessories to install the brake controller. I have included some links that show and explain the ETBC7 installation for you.

For a brake controller I recommend the P2 # 90885 because it is easy to set up and use and it is reliable.
