Carrying 4 Bikes with a Hitch Mounted Bike Rack on a 2016 Mazda CX-5

Question:

I have a 2016 Mazda CX5 with a class 1 hitch. Ive noticed that all the 4 bike racks that allow the bikes to remain on the rack while being tilted or swung away for access to the back hatch required a class 2 hitch. Im quite sure why this is a requirement. If I dont load the rack beyond the class 1 hitches 200lb tongue weight will one of those racks still work on my vehicle?

Expert Reply:

Bike racks that are used on a Class I trailer hitch receiver are only allowed up to 2 bikes. This is because the additional force from weight being extended out from the vehicle is too much leverage for the vehicle to handle and could cause damage to the hitch, rack, and/or vehicle itself. So a bike rack for 4 bikes should not be used (And often will not fit) into a Class I trailer hitch.

However, with that being said we carry Class II and Class III trailer hitch receivers that fit your 2016 Mazda CX-5. I've linked the selection that will fit your Mazda for you.

For Class III hitches I recommend the Draw-Tite # 76138.
