Raising Height of Fifth Wheel Trailer to Gain Clearance and a Level Tow for a 2011 Keystone Cougar

Question:

Ive just purchased a 2011 Keystone Cougar 31SQB travel trailer but the truck Im hauling it with sits 5 inches too high for a level tow. What are you feelings on lifting travel trailers? Thanks!

In my experience, raising the trailer should be carefully considered. Usually going up an inch or two is not too problematic, but at 5 inches I would be concerned about making the trailer top-heavy.

It would be best to first adjust the height of the hitch, as well as the height of the pin box to try to level the trailer with the tow vehicle.

To allow for uneven terrain, a minimum of 6 inches of clearance between the top of the truck side rails and the bottom of the trailer loft is recommended.

Has your truck been lifted? If so, you would also want to check with the manufacturer of the lift kit for information regarding how the lift affects the weight capacity of the truck.
