Troubleshooting 2017 GMC Sierra Breakaway Engaged Causing Error Message In Truck
Question:
While parking in a tight spot the cable got tangled in the slider rail of the 5th wheel hitch and pulled out. I put it back in the switch but the truck says the trailer breaks need service. Brand new trailer first time out.

On some brake controllers, they will see an error like what you have seen when the breakaway plug is pulled because the breakaway battery sends voltage back up that brake controller wire when it causes the brakes to engage.
I recommend disconnecting your truck from your trailer. Disconnecting the battery on your breakaway system then insert the pin and reconnect the breakaway battery. Then connect your truck again. This sometimes will clear the error message. If not, you will need to take it to the dealer to have the message cleared.
I've attached a video of a breakaway kit to assist.
