Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver And Towing Accessories For 2017 Subaru Outback
Question:
Can a 2017 subaru outback with a 2.5L engine handle a class III hitch or should I go with a class II? Im only hauling a riding lawn mower or 4-wheeler.

For your 2017 Subaru Outback, I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # 75673. This will allow you to utilize your manufacturer's towing capacity rating of 2,700 lbs just as a Class II option, but this receiver will give you more options as far as accessories and will be a sturdier hitch than a Class II. It is not a necessity to use the Class III hitch over the Class II for towing a riding lawn mower or 4-wheeler, but it will be a more stable hitch that will allow you more options for a ball mount or other accessory like a bike rack or cargo carrier.
For your trailer wiring, I recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118467. This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your Subaru Outback Wagon's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area, either behind the driver's-side trim panel or in the spare tire compartment. You will need to remove some interior paneling to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, insert the provided fuse into the in-line fuse holder. This will give you a 4-way flat connection compatible with the trailers without electric brakes.
For a ball mount, I recommend the B&W Tow & Stow 2-Ball Mount - 2" Hitch - 5" Drop, 5-1/2" Rise - 7.5K - Black # BWTS10038B. This is an adjustable ball mount to allow you to tow multiple trailers level. It comes with a 1-7/8 inch hitch ball and a 2 inch hitch ball. It has a really nice stowable feature to protect your shins when loading or unloading cargo when not in use and give a nice clean look. I recommend using a hitch lock like # BX8858 to protect your investment.
