What Is Needed To Install The Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Brake Controller # 90195 On A 2011 Dodge Ram
Question:
I have a 2011 ram 1500 with a trailer hitch and wiring without the factory brake control unit installed. What do I need to do to install my P-3 unit? Are there any issues with installing this unit? Will I get a warning message? Thank you

If your 2011 Dodge Ram has the factory 7-Way trailer connector on the rear of your vehicle you will only need the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Brake Controller, part # 90195, and the Tekonsha Brake Control Adapter, part # 3021-P. One end of the adapter will plug into the back of the brake controller and the other end will plug into the factory brake controller port located underneath the dashboard and to the left of the steering column. It will be taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal. See the picture to the right that will show the location. I am including a link to the installation instructions on the brake control adapter.
If your Dodge Ram has the factory 4-Flat trailer connector you will need the Prodigy P3 brake controller and the brake control adapter mentioned above, but you will also need the Hopkins Adapter 4 Pole to 7 Pole and 4 Pole, part # 37185. This adapter will give you a 7-way at the rear of your truck that will be needed when using a brake controller.
This Hopkins adapter will plug into your 4-way connector and mount on the rear of your vehicle. The four remaining wires will need to be hardwired to the corresponding circuits on the vehicle. The white (ground) wire will need to be attached to the vehicle frame, the black (12 volt power) wire is connected to the vehicles battery with 10 gauge wire like the # 10-1-1, through a 40-amp circuit breaker # 9510, the blue (trailer brake) wire will be connected to the blue trailer brake feed wire on the brake controller, and the purple ( auxiliary) wire is for reverse lights if you need that circuit. If any of these connections are not needed just wire tie them up out of the way for future use.
Since you do not have the factory brake controller on your Dodge Ram there will be no error message when you connect the Prodigy 3 brake controller to your truck.
I am including a link to a FAQ page on brake controller installation on a Dodge Ram.
