Troubleshooting Kelsey Brake Controller On 2010 Chevy Silverado
Question:
Trailer brakes grab before tow vehicle brakes engage in stop and go traffic.

The Kelsey brake controller you are referring to must be a time delayed brake controller and needs to be adjusted for braking power and delay. When the controller is adjusted correctly the brake controller will apply the trailer brakes shortly after the vehicle brakes are applied and will apply the brakes as hard as the setting is dialed up to. The problems you are experiencing are due to the style of controller and setup. Time delayed brake controllers brake the same exact amount they are set to every time you put on the brakes whether on the highway or around town in traffic.
You may want to consider changing to a proportional brake controller like the Prodigy P2 # 90885 or P3 # 90195. These proportional controllers will apply the brakes at the same time and with the same intensity as you hit your brake pedal. This will take the jolting and jerking out your system when you are in stop and go traffic.
