Will Trailer Hitch Increase Tongue Weight Capacity Of 2010 Toyota RAV4
Question:
The Rav4 has a tongue weight spec of only 150 lbs. Im a little concerned that someone will stand on the hitch for fun. Does the hitch effectively increase the amount of tongue weight that the Rav4 can tolerate?

Expert Reply:
The tongue weight of your 2010 RAV4 will not change regardless of the hitch you install on your vehicle. If you have the 2.5L engine you are limited to 150-lbs of tongue weight. If you have the 3.5L engine the tongue weight is increased to 200-lbs if you do not have the tow package and 350-lbs if you have the tow package.
The etrailer hitch # e98864 has a tongue weight capacity of 350 lbs, but you will be limited to the tongue weight capacity of your RAV4 since it is lower. So if you use your hitch for a bike rack, the total weight of the rack plus your bikes will have to adhere to your tongue weight capacity on your car. I have attached a link to an installation video for this hitch on a RAV4 for you to check out.
