Correct Position of 5th Wheel Hitch in Bed of 2011 Ford F-150 Short Bed Pickup
Question:
Using formula puts my hitch behind the center of rear axle
asked by: Louis M
Expert Reply:
In 5th wheel hitch installations the hitch will be positioned so that the trailer king pin and the center of the hitch's jaws will be above or slightly forward of the rear axle center. The exact placement from the rear of the bed varies depending on the truck's cab and bed styles and on the particular installation kit used.
Keep in mind that the installation instructions for a 5th wheel will reference the rear edge of the truck bed - NOT the open tailgate - for determining the hitch position. If you measure from the rear edge of the tailgate rather than the bed you will indeed be too far back.
