The Draw-Tite Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 118486, for the 2011 Chevy Camaro includes a separate power wire that connects to the vehicle battery as a means to protect the vehicles sensitive wiring from an overload situation. The wiring on modern cars is more efficient but is not always made to handle the extra power draw associated with powering trailer lights.

The powered converter virtually eliminates power draw from the tail light wiring, protecting the vehicles sensitive wiring. Without it, during an overload situation, the wiring on the vehicle could get damaged, other electronics on the vehicle, including the computer, could also be damaged leading to expensive repairs.

I have included a link to the installation details for this wiring harness for reference.
