Recommended Trailer Axle For 4000 lb Capacity Tandem Axle Trailer

Question:

I have a utility trailer. Double axle 2inch square tube 1-3/4inch wide leaf springs. Springs are double eye 31inch eye to eye. I need to confirm but I think the axle is centered on the spring. 15-1/2X15-1/2. The trailer is rated for 3000#. I would be ok with 4000#. I dont want to go any higher than that. Hopefully you can help me out with this. Thanks waiting for your reply.

That is a big trailer for those axles. It looks like you have traditional 2,000 lb axles which would give you a 4,000 lb max capacity. You will want to make sure all of your components are able to handle that weight. We unfortunately don't have the springs in that length. It appears from your photo that your springs are almost maxed out with the current weight of the trailer frame, so I recommend you upgrade your axles and suspension.

My recommendation is to use the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System w Electric Brake Hubs - Straight Spindle - 3,500 lbs # A35RS545E. You may be able to use a thru axle like the Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes - EZ-Lube - 5 on 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern - 89" - 3,500 lbs # e43SR but you would still have issue with the leaf spring length. I definitely recommend brakes on your axles for a trailer with that weight. This will actually give you a 7,000 lb capacity if the rest of your components can handle that.

The width of your trailer may also require some extra lighting. I've attached an article to assist.
