Which Brake Controller Will Fit In The Factory Slot on a 2010 Dodge Laramie
Question:
I have a friend who has a 2010 Dodge Laramie that did not come with a factory trailer brake system but the slot is on the left for one. What after market system will fit in that location like a factory item and will as well get the error message from the system advisor?

As far as the Prodigy P2 brake controller fitting in the same slot as the factory brake controller, I have seen where somebody has installed it in the factory slot and it looks good, but it is not designed to fit in the factory location and look stock. The only brake controller that will fit in the factory slot exactly is the OEM brake controller from Dodge.
If you have a factory 7-way trailer connector on your 2010 Dodge Ram, you will just need the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Proportional Brake Controller # 90885 with Dodge Adapter, # 3021-P. The wiring adapter is a plug-in vehicle specific brake control adapter, that will connect to the brake controller port located underneath the dash and left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal. There will be a 4-pin connector that mates with the one on the adapter.
If you have a factory 4-flat trailer connector on your Dodge Ram you will need the Tekonsha brake controller # 90885 and adapter # 3021-P mentioned above, but you will also need the Hopkins Adapter 4-Pole to 7-Pole and 4-Pole, part # 37185. This adapter will give you a 7-way at the rear of your truck that will be needed when using a brake controller.
This Hopkins adapter will plug into your 4-Way connector and mount on the rear of your vehicle. The four remaining wires will need to be hardwired to the corresponding circuits on the vehicle. The white (ground) wire will need to be attached to the vehicle frame, the black (12 volt power) wire is connected to the vehicles battery with 10 gauge wire like the # 10-1-1, through a 40-amp circuit breaker # 9510, the blue (trailer brake) wire will be connected to the blue trailer brake feed wire on the brake controller, and the purple (auxiliary) wire is for reverse lights if you need that circuit. If any of these connections are not needed, just wire tie them up out of the way for future use.
Since you do not have the factory brake controller on your Dodge Ram, there will be no error message when you connect the Prodigy 2 brake controller to your truck.
If you do not have a factory trailer connector on your truck, you will need to let me know what size (1500, 2500, 3500) truck you have and I can recommend the correct wiring you will need.
I am including a link to a FAQ page on brake controller installation on a Dodge Ram.
