Where to Look for the Stop Light Wire for a Trailer Brake Controller on a 2001 Toyota Tacoma

Question:

Where is the brake wire on my 2001 tacoma 4 cyl that connects to the brake red wire brake signal on the Prodigy 2 brake controller? The truck is not prewired with a brake controller harness to connect directly to.

First, you will want to locate the brake switch located above the brake pedal. There will be numerous wires going in and out of it. The wire you need will be on the cold side (meaning it does not have power running through it all the time). You will need to use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to find the correct wire.

You are looking for the wire that provides a signal (lights up the circuit tester) ONLY when the brake pedal is pressed. The wire should not have a signal at any other time (like with the lights on or turn signal engaged). While the specific color of the wire you need will be hard to determine, it could possibly be a green wire with a white tracer or a green wire with a yellow tracer.

I have included a link to our Brake Controller FAQ for reference.
