Troubleshooting 4-Pole Wiring Installation

Question:

I install a Curt wiring kit from eTrailer in my 2012 KIA Sorrento in 2013. Yesterday I noticed that my right trailer brake/turnsignal light was on whenever the trailer was plugged into my vehicle. Should I assume that the converter has malfunctioned and that I need to replace it with a new wiring kit?

Thank you for your many purchases from etrailer! We appreciate your repeat business and your trust. The item you installed was Curt 4-pole harness kit # C59236 which is a confirmed fit for your 2012 Kia Sorento.

Your trailer's right stop/turn light staying on whenever the trailer is plugged in could indicate damage in the converter but it could also be something as simple as a bit of trapped water or dirt, or perhaps corrosion inside the electrical connectors. It is easy to test to confirm.

I suggest you unplug the trailer and apply a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to the wiring contact for the right stop/turn function. Please refer to the linked video to see how to use the tester. What you want to do is test the green wire that enters the vehicle side of the converter (this is the input signal from the car for the right turn and right brake signals). While your helper activates the brakes, test the green input wire for a signal from the car. Do the same for the right turn function, also carried on the green wire. If you have the correct signals going into the converter when the functions are activated, then move to the output side and again test the 4-pole contact for the green wire.

If you detect output when there is no input signal feeding the converter then it is damaged and should be replaced. In this case you will want to inspect all of the trailer wiring to find the cause for the short that is likely to be what damaged the converter. Correct any trailer wiring issues before installing a new harness.
