When wiring to a 4 flat connection on a towed vehicle, what is the function of the 5th terminal that is not being used?

The Wesbar Coiled Adapter # 787196 can be used as a 4-way or 5-way trailer connector. It's commonly used as a 4-way umbilical when flat towing a vehicle and the fifth pin isn't used. The fifth pin on the 5-way is the same circuit as the center pin on the 7-way, which is generally the backup light circuit but could be wired with something different if you so choose.
