Recommended Options for Better 5th Wheel Trailer Clearance for a 2017 Ram 3500

Question:

Hello... I have a 2017 Ram 3500, with a 6.4 box, a Curt Q20 5th wheel in the bed using the factory puck mounting. The 5th wheel toy hauler I have has a gross weight under 15,000 lbs. The Lippert pin box that came with the camper is Model # LIPP1621HD I admit I turned too sharp in a parking lot and dented the right side of the cab. I dont want to repeat this same stupid mistake again.... Please give me some professional advice on what modifications i will need. Thank You!

There are a couple of different options that you have when looking to add some clearance from your trailer to help protect your 2017 Ram 3500.

If you are just using the regular Curt Q20 5th Wheel Hitch, like part # C16530-16021, then the first, and most economical, option would be to purchase the Curt R20 Round Tube Slider, part # C16550, along with the Adapter, part # C16022. This will allow you to slide the Q20 back 12 inches for the additional clearance that you are looking for when making those tighter turns.

Another option would be to use the Demco Hijacker # DM8550034 Autoslide 5th Wheel Hitch along with the Demco Rail Adapter # DM6099. This 5th wheel hitch is the next step up from your conventional 5th wheel sliding hitch. The Hijacker will give you an additional 14 inches of clearance for those tight turns, but the best part is that you will not have to get in and out of your Ram to unlock and then lock the sliding feature. The Autoslide on the Hijacker will automatically move when you start making turns at slower speeds. The other great thing about this hitch is the single-piece jaw that wraps around the king-pin for a smoother ride.

The last option that you have would be to install a Sidewinder. For your application you could use part # RP34FR. A Sidewinder will move the pivot point from where your king pin connects to the 5th wheel hitch, to the rotating turret which will install on your trailer. This setup will give you an additional 22 inches of turning clearance. A lot of people like this option since sliding hitches tend to be heavier; it makes clearing the bed of your truck much easier when you need unrestricted access to it.

The upgrade to the Sidewinder is the 5th Airborne Premium # RP61422. This Sidewinder option adds the 22 inches of clearance as well, but it also integrates an air bag in the pin box to help absorb shock and chucking.

Please note that you cannot use a Sidewinder with the Hijacker because of the Autoslide feature. If you are wanting to use a Sidewinder with a regular sliding 5th wheel hitch, the hitch must remain locked in the tow position at all times. Since the pivot point will no longer be over the 5th wheel hitch, there will be too many pivot points if you don't lock the hitch. Also keep in mind, the Curt A-Series and Q-Series hitches are not compatible with the Reese Sidewinder.

I have attached some install and demonstration videos for you to review as well.
