Availability of Replacement Parts for Reese Weight Distribution System # RP66021
Question:
When I pulled the sway control bar all the way out, some pieces fell out. Is there something supposed to be on the bar itself? if so can you buy it and attach it to the bar. the sway control is in good shape. and is it safe to pull my RV with a naked bar? Thanks

The pieces that came off your weight distribution/sway control system could be several things, depending on which end the pieces came from and if they came from a sway control component or a weight distribution component. Either way, you do not want to tow your trailer with a naked bar until the problem is fixed.
If it came from the spring bar and it is the end that goes into the weight distribution head, it is probably the trunnion, like # 58098. This is the part that holds the spring bar in the head. If any part of it is broken it will need to be replaced before you can use the system again. Otherwise the bar will not stay in the head and it will not be safe to tow. This is the correct replacement trunnion for the weight distribution system, # RP66021, that you have referenced.
If it came from the other end of the spring bar, check to see that the hardware is in place where the chain attaches to the end of the bar. If any hardware is missing, it, too, will need to be replaced before you can safely tow. We do have a replacement hardware kit, # 66014, that you can use with the weight distribution system you have referenced.
If any part of the head is broken, the head will need to be replaced before you can safely tow. For the system you have referenced, you would use Replacement Head, # RP58167. This head unit comes with mounting hardware and serrated washers that will attach it to the shank.
Finally, if pieces came out of the trailer hitch on the vehicle when pulling out the shank, I would check to see if they are pieces of black powder coat which could have rubbed off. If it is black powder coat then there is nothing to be concerned about. If it is pieces of metal then the shank or hitch may be too large/small or the system could be overloaded causing metal to be shaved off inside the hitch receiver tube.
