Option for Allowing Fifth Wheel Trailer to Sit Level and Not Hit Pin Box on Tailgate
Question:
Hello, I purchased a BandW gooseneck and fifthwheel sliding companion. I installed it in my 2016 ram 2500 this past weekend. I kept 6-7inch of clearance between the bed rail and camper. To do this I had to put the fifthwheel on its lowest setting. Upon doing this when I tried to use the sliding function the bottom of the kingpin housing rammed into my tailgate. I need the extra height for it to clear my tailgate. If i would adjust the fifthwheel back up the camper will ride slanting up in the front, is this okay and if not what are my options to fix this? Thanks

Can you raise the pin box higher in the frame of your trailer? Typically there are a few different mounting holes that can be used. This will allow you to raise up the head of the hitch so that you are still level but the pin box would be higher. Otherwise you'd have to raise the suspension of the trailer.
You can do this by moving the axles from being above the leaf springs to below the leaf springs.
The diameter of your trailer axle will determine the size of the parts that you will need to order. If your axle is 3 inches diameter, the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit, # K71-385-00, would be a great choice and if your axle is 2-3/8 inch diameter you could use the Over-Under Kit, # K71-384-00. These kits can be installed without welding but the manufacturer strongly recommends having the new spring seat tacked in place on the other side of the trailer axle.
