Bias or Radial Trailer Tires Sized 205/75-14 for Tandem Axle Trailer

Question:

I have a 2006 6x12 tandem axle enclosed trailer. Axles rated at #3500 each. Current tires are original ST205/75D14. I am looking at replacing all 4 tires and wondering if it is better to keep the bias ply tires or switch all to radials. My spare is a bias ply that has never touched the ground so I know if I switch to radials it would mean buying 5 tires instead of just the 4. Is there really that much to gain by switching to radials? The bias ply have worked very well on this trailer. I have used this for long hauls at hwy speeds and have never had a problem with the tires overheating. It tracks great with the bias as well. Any advice would be appreciated.

That's a long time to have your original tires. We recommend replacing your tires every 5 to 6 years regardless of the mileage on them.

Radial tires do generally run cooler and wear better than bias tires. With that being said if the bias tires are working for you then it might be best to stick with it. Especially to keep the cost down and not replace your spare. However, depending on how old it is, you might want to replace your spare anyway. Tires will break down over time, especially if they're exposed to the elements. If your spare is more than a few years old I'd replace it as well.

If you decide to stick with bias tires I suggest the # AM1ST86. It has a load range C with a max load of 1,760 pounds at 50 psi.

For radials I recommend # TR20514. Also a load range C tire with a max of 1,760 pounds at 50 psi.
