How To Connect 7-Way Connector On Jeep To A 5-Way Round Connector On A Trailer
Question:
I have a seven pin connector on my Jeep and my trailer has a 5 pin round. Is there an adapter made for this? I cant find one anywhere. I at the point of making my own by taking a five round vehicle end and wiring it to a five flat and buying an adapter to work with it. Surprised the ends are available but no adapters.

While we do not carry a 7-way to a 5-way round trailer connector adapter, you do have an option. I would recommend removing the 5-pin round connector on your trailer and replace with the Hopkins 7-Way Molded Trailer Wire Connector, 3 Foot Long, part # H20042. This will give you a 7-way on your trailer and you will be able to just plug-in the 7-way trailer connector to the 7-way connector on your Jeep. It comes with a 3-foot-long lead that can be wired to your trailers wiring harness.
Using a circuit tester, like part # PTW2993, you will test the wires on your trailer for function and wire accordingly to the pigtail wire ends of the Hopkins # H20042 trailer connector. The wires that will not be needed can be taped up and used at a later time. If you need longer than a 3-foot lead I also have the Hopkins 7-Way Molded Trailer Wire Connector, 8 foot Long, part # H20046, that will give you an 8-foot lead.
The other options you have would be to remove the 5-pin round connector on your trailer and replace with a 5-flat, but you will still need to use an adapter. I would not recommend to change the 7-way connector on your Jeep, because a 7-way is the most common connector used when towing. Leaving the 7-way on your Jeep would give you more flexibility to tow other trailers.
I am including a link to a FAQ page on trailer wiring and a video link of the Hopkins 7-way, # H20046, being installed on a trailer.
