Recommended Best Truck For Towing 20,000-Lb Gooseneck Trailer

Question:

We are looking at buying a new truck. We pull a 30 ft. gooseneck trailer and loaded its about 18,000-20,000 lbs. So the new single-wheel 1 ton trucks claim they can tow this amount, but I think a dually would perform much better... Your thoughts? Thank you,

When asked for our recommendation about trucks that are towing fifth wheel or gooseneck trailers, most of the time we will recommend 1-ton trucks with an 8-ft bed and a diesel engine.

The truck I recommend is the Ram 3500 Dually Tradesman with a 6.7 Cummins diesel and a 4.10 axle ratio. The towing capacity for this truck is 31,210 lbs. With a 3.73 axle ratio the towing capacity is 25,910 lbs.

So if you plan on towing anything bigger than the trailer you are pulling I would go with the 4.10. If you don't think you will ever go bigger then the 3.73 may be the way you want to go.

The gooseneck trailer hitch I recommend for the 2017 Ram 3500 is the B&W Turnoverball, part # BWGNRK1314. This is an under bed installation so you have full use of your truck bed when you are not towing. And the great thing is if you ever decide you want to tow a fifth wheel trailer you can use the B7W Companion like part # BWRVK3500-5W.
