How To Tow Fifth Wheel And Gooseneck Trailers With A Gooseneck Hitch On A 2006 Chevy Silverado

Question:

i have a 2005 thor fury tahoe toy hauler and it weighs 15,500 loaded it has a fabex 520 pin box on it. can u only get the 19,000 pound model airborne sidewinder for this setup or can i get a 16,000 pound model for fabex 520? And also i had a b and w companion but discovered it will not work with sidewinder so i sold it. so i am lookin for a new fifth wheel hitch that will work with sidewinder but also want it to be easy to take in and out of truck bed and also i have a b and w gooseneck hitch so i want to still be able to use that when im not using fifth wheel. which hitch set up would you recommend for my needs and setup i want to use? and also is the sidewinder anymore stressful on the frame of the camper than the factory pin box? thank you and hope to hear from you soon.

If you are wanting to use the B and W gooseneck hitch that is in your 2006 Chevrolet Silverado you will have to use the 5th Airborne Premium Fifth Wheel Air Ride Coupler, part # 5AB-S500-700, with a Draw-Tite Hi-Rise Gooseneck to Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch, part # 9480.

The 5th Airborne standard king pin has a 21,000 lbs. weight capacity and will attach to your Fabex 520 pin box. The Draw-Tite Hi-Rise adapter will attach to your B and W gooseneck hitch and give you a fifth wheel hitch for hookup with the 5th Airborne king pin.

You will not be able to use a Sidewinder with any of the fifth wheel to gooseneck adapters because you cannot have two pivot points when towing. Also, the Draw-Tite Hi-Rise gooseneck adapter # 9480, cannot be used with a Sidewinder because the rotation they allow would put too much stress on the Hi-Rise and it would not be a safe towing situation.

The other option would be to remove the B and W gooseneck hitch in your 2006 Chevrolet Silverado and install a 16K or 20K fifth wheel hitch with base rails and a installation kit. Then, you would be able to use a 5th Airborne with a Sidewinder like the Reese 5th Airborne Premium 5th Wheel Air Ride King Pin w/ Sidewinder and Turret - 16,000 lbs, part # RP61412, on your fifth wheel hitch.

Then, when you are wanting to use your gooseneck trailer you will need to use the Bulldog Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Coupler Adapter - Round - 25,000 lbs, part # BD0289580300, This adapter will bolt to your gooseneck coupler and allow you to connect your gooseneck trailer to the fifth wheel hitch.

Also, a sidewinder does not put anymore stress on the frame of a camper than the factory pin box.

If you decide which way you will want to go, just let me know the bed size on your vehicle and I will help you get the correct towing setup. I am including links to instructions on the 5th airborne coupler and to some FAQ pages on 5th airborne information.
