Does Use of Weight Distribution System Increase Trailer Towing Capacity

Question:

Hello, I have a 2011 Ford F150 with factory installed tow package. Towing GVWR 7200lbs. Hitch rating 500lbs. If I get a anti sway weight distribution hitch, will this effect how much weight my hitch can take? Im looking at a travel trailer that is 4200lbs with a hitch weight of 525lbs. not in my limits by 25lbs Im a stickler for the rules. Thank you!

Some trailer hitches will have higher tongue weight (TW) and towing capacities when used with a weight distribution/sway control (WD/SC) system like the Pro Series # 49570. As an example, the Draw-Tite Class III hitch # 75691 we offer for your truck is rated for 600-lbs of TW and 6K trailer weight without a WD/SC system, but those ratings double to 1200-lbs and 12,000-lbs when a system is used. Your hitch's safety/warning sticker will indicate if it has a higher rating with WD/SC. You will also want to check your F-150 manual to make sure it also has the capacity required for your trailer. If the truck is not rated adequately for the trailer then the hitch having the correct capacity does not matter. The lower rating rules.

Apart from potentially increasing your towing capacity, a WD/SC will keep your tow vehicle more level by shifting some trailer TW forward onto the truck's front axle. This can help maintain your steering and braking performance as well as reduce the stress from pulling a trailer that sways.
