Brake Controller Recommendation and Location of Factory Port on 2017 Ford Explorer
Question:
Hi, I just took possession of my new 2017 Ford Explorer XLT V6 with the optional tow package class III. I would like to buy the Tekonsha P3 brake control in order to tow a travel trailer 4000 lbs double axle. I am not able to locate the plugging or harness for the brake control in the Explorer. I saw your post on the Explorer 2016, but before removing any panel I would appreciate your opinion on my choice for the brake control and the confirmation of the location of the plug. Thank you very much for your help,

The Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Brake Controller # 90195 is an excellent system. It is a proportional brake controller, which means it will activate your trailer's brakes at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to them in your vehicle. This brake controller also has 3 boost levels to let you adjust initial braking power as well as continuous diagnostic checks to alert you to any potential issues.
If your Explorer has a factory 7-way, you just need the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter # 3035-P for installation. One end will plug into the brake controller and the other end will go into the built-in harness beneath your Explorer's dash. The port on your 2017 Ford Explorer will be behind the appearance panel under the driver's side. Just remove the two screws to get the panel to drop and the port will be where your right knee is when sitting down in the driver's seat. It should be a gray connector and one of the wires coming from it will be yellow with a red stripe.
