Brake Wire Location For the Hopkins Agility Plug In Wiring on a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe Z71

Question:

On my Hopkins Agility I get the red dot, but when Im under way pulling a 2 horse trailer, the display will either constanly flash numbers or it will stay on a number. Is this normal? Also, Can you please give me the correct location in the plug in harness for the red wire? I am suspecting it is in the wrong place. The tow vehicle is a 2001 Chevy Z71 Tahoe with the factory tow package. Thanks

The first thing you should do is make sure that the red wire on the Plug-in Simple Brake Wiring Adapter, item # HM47795, is connected to the correct port in the connector. For your 2001 Chevy Tahoe Z71 you will need to insert the red wire into slot A. This slot is the top left slot, with the blue locking tab up and the connector facing away from you, see photo at right. If your brake controller comes on when the headlights are turned on you definitely have the red wire in the wrong location.

If this does not solve the issue with your Agility Electric Brake Controller, item # HM47294, you will need do some troubleshooting.

First, check the trailer connectors inside and out for corrosion. If you see green or white corrosion inside the connectors they will need to be replaced. The vehicle side replacement for your Tahoe is the Pollak 7- and 4-Pole Trailer Connector Socket, item # HM40975. For the trailer connector you would need the Pollak Black Plastic, 7-Pole, RV-Style Trailer Connector, item # PK12706.

Next, check the wiring on the trailer and make sure the ground wire at the trailer tongue and trailer brakes are securely attached to the trailer frame and that the power wires are connected to the brake magnet wiring with no broke pinched or frayed wires.

Finally, check the brake controller itself. You will need to sever the blue wire exiting the back of the controller, leaving enough wire to reattach it when testing is complete. With the blue wire severed check the brake controller and see if it is still malfunctioning. You should get the full 12 volts with the manual override activated fully. If your red wire is in the correct location and the malfunction persists, after checking all of the above possibilities, your brake controller will most likely need to be replaced. The Agility has a lifetime warranty so you will need to contact Hopkins for replacement.
