The effectiveness of a transmission cooler, like # D13502, depends on several factors. It depends on the size of the cooler, where it is mounted, what type of cooler, what is going to be towed, and the conditions/terrain you will be towing in. The bottom line is that if you are towing something small a short distance or something large a long distance, a cooler will help to keep transmission fluid cooler thus prolonging the life of the transmission on your 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan. Transmission fluid cannot be over-cooled, so adding a cooler is a good idea.

The Derale Transmission Cooler, # D13502, would be a good choice for your van. It is not the largest capacity cooler but when adding one to a vehicle often times the added capacity means that more transmission fluid will need to be added so that it remains at the proper level. You would just need to check the transmission fluid after installing the cooler, and add transmission fluid as needed.

The efficiency of the cooler relies largely on where it is mounted. There are basically 3 locations to mount a cooler. In order of greatest to least efficiency they are 1) in front of the air conditioning core, 2) between the core and the radiator, and 3) between the radiator and engine. If this last location is used, the cooler will be 40 percent less efficient than position 1 so a larger cooler is recommended to make up for the loss in efficiency. For your van, the larger capacity cooler would be # D13503. Of these 3 locations, check to see which offers enough space to install the cooler and go with the most efficient one.

I have included a link to our FAQ on transmission coolers for reference. I have also included a link to a video showing a typical installation of a cooler for you to review.
