For your 2016 Ford Explorer without a tow package, you will first need to get a 4-way wiring connection. To do this, I recommend using the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118540. This wiring harness connects easily to factory wiring at the rear on the passenger's side.
Then you will use that 4-way to add the Universal Installation Kit For Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7. This kit will give you the wire, connections, circuit breakers and the 7-Way trailer connection.
For a brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. This is a proportional brake controller giving your trailer brakes the same amount of braking pressure at the same time as you hit the brakes in your Explorer. It has an easy to read and understand LCD screen that takes the code deciphering of most brake controllers out of the question as well as telling you what you need to know at a quick glance. It is adjustable to your driving preferences and has 3 levels of boost.
