For your 2016 Nissan Frontier, I recommend the proportional brake controller over the time based controller. The proportional controller senses the amount of pressure and reacts immediately giving the same amount of pressure to your trailer brakes at the same time as you apply the brakes in your Frontier.
For your vehicle, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 which has an easy to read LCD screen that will let you know any issues in real time. There is no code deciphering and it has 3 levels of boost in addition to its adjustability for your driving preferences. It is easy to connect to your vehicle using the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Nissan and Infiniti # 3050-P which plugs into the junction box beneath your vehicle's dashboard. I've attached a video to assist.
