Electric Trailer Brakes on a Pontoon Single Axle Trailer with Brake Flanges Turned 90 Degrees

Question:

Hello - I saw this discussion - https://www.etrailer.com/question-4626.html I am looking for some guidance on adding electric trailer brakes for my 2012 Load Rite 20ft Single Axle, Galvanized Trailer - Model # 202380102HGG0. I want to make sure I the proper weight rated brakes. Last, Id like to confirm my square flange on the end of each of axles sides is appropriate. Its cocked at an angle making a diamond in stead of a square when looked at straight on the corners of the square point 12 oclock / 3 / 6 / and 9 oclock. Ive attached a photo to illustrate. Im wondering if this might eliminate the feasibility for electric brakes or possibly cause any performance issues? I understand EOH would be more durable in water environment, would also appreciate any insight into expected 100 electric brakes when using the shrink wrap connections and unplugging from vehicle prior to boat ramp use. Pictures attached. Thanks in advance Jeff

To determine the correct brakes for your trailer you should find the weight capacity of the axle. It's generally stamped somewhere on the axle itself. Then choose brakes for the same, or similar capacity. For instance, the # AKEBRK-35R-SA and # AKEBRK-35L-SA are right and left hand brake assemblies for a 3,500 pound axle.

Your brake flange at a angle, although, isn't typical, isn't an issue. Brakes can still be installed and turned 90 degrees. I would suggest turning them counter-clockwise so the magnets will be towards the front of the trailer rather than the back.

Electric brakes on boat trailers has gotten to be more popular among trailer manufacturers because wire insulation has improved. Electric over hydraulic is still the preferred but not like it used to be.

I've attached a couple of articles on installing brakes onto a trailer you can take a look at.
