Installation And Operation Of Isolation Solenoid

Question:

What gauge wire should be used on a battery isolation solenoid between the winch battery and the output solenoid post? What gauge wire is needed from the 7 pin connector from the truck 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 to the solenoid post input post? My trailer wiring also has a 7 pin connector installed to add the 12 volt ignition key controlled circuit source for the ignition wire as required. What is the best ignition source to tap into I.E. tail/ running lites? My truck has power to the auxiliary or hot 12 volt pin when the key is in the OFFinch position will that affect me using the Battery Isolation Solenoid? Thank you

Expert Reply:

The Battery Isolation Solenoid # PK5231201 is designed to shut off the 12-volt feed from your vehicle battery to 12-volt accessories on your trailer when the ignition is turned off. This lets you run the trailer's electrical components without draining your battery.

With this solenoid, I recommend using 10 gauge # 10-1-1 wire sold by the foot. You can tap into any power signal to use as the aux/ignition switch. Using the running Lights will give you the ability to power the solenoid on and off using the switch in your cab. Since your truck uses a solenoid or relay to not allow 12V power when your ignition is in the Off position, you will either need to have the ignition in your vehicle on or in accessory mode to use the separate solenoid.
