For your 2011 BMW 5 Series, you will need the Curt Powered Tail Light Converter # C59236 in order to power your trailer's rear lights. This is a hardwire kit that is confirmed to work with your vehicle that will connect directly to your battery to avoid overloading its sensitive electrical system. I have included the instruction manual for your review.
If you do not want to splice into your vehicle's wiring system, the Tekonsha ZCI Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness, part # 119250KIT is a good option. This harness uses zero-contact interface sensors to read the light signals without cutting or splicing into the vehicle wiring.
If you are needing to power other trailer functions such as electric brakes, you can instead use the Universal Installation Kit # ETBC7. This kit includes everything needed to install a brake controller in your vehicle as well as a fully functional 7-way connector.
