Since your 2016 Ford Escape has the tow package you will need a brake controller and, if you don't already have one, a 7-way trailer connector.
If your Escape needs a 7-way connector you can use the Hopkins # HM40975. This will plug directly into the wiring of your vehicle. Once this is installed check your owner's manual for any towing related fuses and make sure they're already installed. I looked at an online copy of your manual and according to it fuse F26 in the luggage fuse compartment behind the passenger side wheel well should be checked. You can also check each function of the new 7-way using a circuit tester # PTW2993.
For a brake controller I suggest the Prodigy P2 # 90885 because of how easy it is to install and use. It's one of the most popular controllers we carry. Since your Escape does not include a connector under the dash for brake controllers, you'll need to wire in # 5506 using the included 40-amp fuse to install the P2.
I've linked some install videos and an article that you may find helpful.
