How Can Weight Distribution System Be Made to Work with Different Trailer Tongue Weights

Question:

In the subject line, which wd should I buy? I migjt upgrade to a Jeep Grand Cherokee and possinly another camper that weighs 5000lbs. I want to buy one wd that works for both vehicles and campers. Can I do that with one Wd? Or am I limited due to my li ited tow capability with my Wrangler Unlimited?

All weight distribution/sway control systems such as the Equal-i-zer 4-Point # EQ37060ET operate over a range of trailer tongue weight (TW). Ideally your actual TW will fall near the middle of the system's operating range. If the fully-loaded TWs of both trailers happen to fall within the systems operating range, in the case of this system 200- to 800-lbs, then the one system would work for both trailers. The different vehicles matter only in terms of their heights; two vehicles with different heights may require you to use a different shank for each to keep your hitched trailer level.

It is possible to swap out the spring bars for a WD system to allow it to operate properly for two different trailers. For instance, we have replacement Equalizer spring bars shown on the linked page that work for a wide range of tongue weights. If your two trailers have very different TWs you can just choose another set of bars and use the one system.

You will want to measure the fully-loaded trailers' TWs using a scale like # e99044 before selecting your WD system.
